Spice/Smut

My books will never contain explicit sexual content. My writing is geared towards teens, and I will never include explicit smut.

  • The Wastelands Series is completely spice-free. They cuddle, they kiss, and that's the end of it.

  • The Way We Bleed series has some innuendo and euphemisms, and one character throughout the series battles with lust, as a major theme throughout the story is the consequences of the seven deadly sins. You can count on one or two fade-to-black scenes in each book, but again, absolutely nothing explicit is shown. The scene will cut off before any clothes come off. The first book, Shades of Red, has one scene involving SA between two side characters, but the main character intervenes before it goes past inappropriate touching.

Cussing

My books do not overuse foul language. Movie rating guidelines say that for a film to be PG-13, it cannot include more than one f-bomb, and that's the rule I go by for my books (though so far none of my published works have an f-bomb). There is some cussing, especially in The Way We Bleed series, but not an over-presence of it. Slang words that are more family-friendly typically replace the worst of the language.

Mature Themes

  • The Wastelands Series has themes on-par with other YA dystopian books such as The Hunger Games trilogy. It deals with corruption, betrayal, redemption, good versus evil, and death. The main character is an assassin, and the series is set in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, so expect PG-13 levels of violence.

  • The Way We Bleed series has more mature themes (which is the main reason it has a higher age rating than my other books) that include the cycle of violence, right versus wrong, and the consequences of the seven deadly sins. Characters deal with things such as alcoholism, lust, suicidal thoughts, anger issues, greed, envy, and an overabundance of gang-related violence.

Age Ratings

To sum all of this up:

  • The Wastelands Series is suited for young adult audiences, ages 13+. While the series is technically not YA because the main character is 20/21 throughout the course of the series, which is older than most YA protagonists, it is suited for YA audiences in every other aspect.

  • The Way We Bleed series has an age rating of 15/16+. The first book, Shades of Red, is rated 14/15+, but the other books in the series have slightly more mature themes as it gets deeper into the story. The series is suitable for upper-YA or new adult audiences.
